Metaphysical Choons!

For once here are some tunes that are philosophical rather than dutty and tropical...

Plumbers and Brains

The idea that a greater understanding of computers can give us clues as to how the human brain works is akin to the claim that a better understanding of sewers and plumbing could give us clues as to how the heart and circulatory system works. The human brain is a remarkable, chaotic and complex mechanism and each one is unique. If it is in any sense a computer it is nothing like anything we would normally think of as a computer. To sum up Fodor should stick to plumbing if its the only game in his town.

Roughness

Enough party fun times... Time for something a bit more serious and also maybe more interesting. If you don't know about chaos and fractals the you should get involved as they are a beautiful mathematical phenomenon. I think it is fair to say that whatever you do in your life you regularly encounter apparently fractal phenomena whether it is in nature, art or mathematics. Even if you are interested in none of these things just walking about spotting fractals and chaos can be fun (it really can, I promise!). If you are intrigued to learn more James Gleick's Chaos is a readable classic that really gets you into the heads of the crazy scientists who discovered the significance of fractals. More immediately here is a great talk by legendary genius Benoit Mandlebrot on "Roughness".

Psychologist proves that dancing is better than drugs

Walter Freeman the controversial badman of neuropsychology with a profound insight into the psychology of joy. He is one of the few neuroscientists to fully appreciate the significance of the chaotic nature of our brains and is worth reading whether you have a clue what hes on about or not. (see below for a link to all his papers)

The Birth of Dutty Metaphysics

Socrates infamously claimed that the unexamined life is not worth living. He was probably right. However, when you really start to analyse life it can be fucking depressing.

You are nothing but an insignificant little animal. One member of a plague of vicious and destructive monkeys that are currently in the midst of not only destroying all the other magnificent creatures around us but also reducing this beautiful planet to a dusty lifeless lump of rock. One might argue that this is some sort of achievement in itself. At least you are playing a part in something bigger. Unfortunately the eradication of all life on earth isn't actually all that big. Just as you are nothing but a tiny little locust stuck to the vast sphere we call home, this planet itself is nothing but a tiny insignificant speck of dust in the vast and ancient cosmos and the universe itself may be just a single insignificant trajectory amongst the limitless possibilities of the multiverse.

You are a complex system of atoms whose only function is to cling to life for as long as possible and fuck as much as possible in order to create as many more rapacious apes as possible. Everything you are and everything you do is determined by the way that this system interacts with the world as governed by the laws of physics and there is nothing that you can do to transcend these laws. There is no universal right or wrong. There is no heaven or hell. You will rot in the ground. You will become nothing and it won't matter anyway because you were nothing all along. Every thing that you thought was a thing was nothing but a fleeting eddy in the flow of the universe raised to significance on the anthropocentric pedestal that is your contingent means of classifying reality (a tool for fucking and avoiding death). The only thing is Everything, to which you are nothing.

Despite all this there is no point getting depressed. It turns out that fucking, avoiding death, and being insignificant are all lots of fun. To demonstrate watch the video below

Hence the purpose of this blog. Dutty Metaphysics. Some hopefully interesting philosophical perspectives to contemplate interspersed with dutty tropical bass to keep you jolly.
